Job Description

The Miami Herald is hiring a reporter to help cover the Dolphins, the premier pro sports beat in South Florida, and trending topics.

The job requires a reporter who is able to capture the bigger picture, trends, analysis and quick-takes on a team that has captured the imagination of fans in South Florida and around the nation. With consecutive playoff appearances and a national appearance on "Hard Knocks," Tua Tagovailoa, Mike McDaniel and Co. transcend diehard football fans.

The reporter's goal is to attract digital readers through sports stories that have an impact and retain subscribers with in-depth and quick-turn content that can't be found elsewhere. The reporter will also push the envelope of delivery methods - leveraging multimedia, social media, and alternative storytelling formats - to reach fans wherever they may be.

Five or more years of experience on a pro or major college beat is preferred. Please include a resume and three to five examples of your work.

Qualifications

A passion for building a community of sports fans and engaging them in conversations around what's trending and what's being debated in the NFL
The ability to collaborate and work as part of a team of editors and reporters
Experience covering the NFL and strong relationships with league and team officials, coaches, players and agents
Excellent writing and reporting skills
Ability to write breaking news, enterprise and analysis
Bachelor's in communications, journalism, digital media or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Skills:

Deep knowledge of football and the NFL.
Strong reporting skills, including asking smart, persistent questions.
Speed with breaking news.
Ability to develop strong sources on a competitive beat.
Flexibility to juggle multiple stories and priorities.
Ability to shift priorities in a flash, as the news dictates.
Ability to work independently, drawing on solid news judgment, while maintaining timely communication with editors.
Demonstrated mastery of social media - as a reporting tool and as a way to push out news, build and engage our audience and enhance your own brand.
Exceptional track record with accuracy - built on strong work habits geared toward double-checking facts, names and figures.
Ability to produce clean, clear, concise copy every time.
Strong skills as a collaborator, able to work constructively with editors and reporting colleagues in a deadline-driven environment.
