Location on site Description The Associate Conductor is responsible for: supporting the artistic development of the orchestra as established by the Music Director and to work in close relationship with him; to conduct Classical, Pops, Youth, Film, Contemporary Popular Artist Specials, and other concerts as assigned; to assist the Oregon Symphony in the shaping of education, youth, and community programs; and to provide support to the artistic staff and on-call coverage of concerts and rehearsals of its Classical Concert series and Classical Specials. The Associate Conductor will serve as a representative for the Oregon Symphony Association to students, local educators, the media, and will assist in donor stewardship and cultivation. Additional duties may be added. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervises and directs the orchestra in artistic matters during rehearsals and concerts conducted. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 1. CONDUCTING The Associate Conductor will rehearse and conduct all Oregon Symphony concerts, as assigned, including: One Classical subscription series concert week, Youth Concerts, Family Concerts, Films, numerous Popular Specials, other community and special concerts. 2. COVERING The Associate Conductor will be present at all rehearsals of the Oregon Symphonys Classical Series programs and will attend all performances and any runouts. They are expected to attend the dress rehearsal and one performance of all Pops Series programs. Covering means Associate Conductor will be ready to conduct rehearsals and concerts as programmed at a moments notice. 3. OTHER The Associate Conductor will participate in day-to-day administrative affairs of the Oregon Symphony Association, including Education and Community Engagement initiatives, Board and Staff meetings, as well as public relations and fundraising activities, as requested. They will serve as a representative for all for all Educational and Youth programs to students, educators and other constituencies. The Associate Conductor will act as a musical consultant, if requested, in any orchestra recordings or broadcasts, or livestreaming that may be undertaken and will advise and review scores and recordings of new works, as requested. The Associate Conductor will be able to develop a Pops Concert program as well as a Youth Concert program appropriate for targeted grade levels in order to achieve agreed upon learning goals. Other duties as may be assigned. COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS The Associate Conductor is a member of the Oregon Symphony Association staff, receiving an annual salary and benefits. The Associate Conductor may accept guest conducting opportunities with the approval of the Oregon Symphony Association, subject to pro-rated salary reductions if engagements conflict with OSA responsibilities. Education and/or Experience: Bachelors degree (BA) from four-year college or university or equivalent professional training. Experience as a professional orchestral conductor at the Symphony Orchestra level is desirable. Language Skills: Excellent communication skills; engaging, informative public speaking skills. Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Computer Skills: Ability to research and locate information on the internet; ability to communicate via e-mail and to text. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must have or acquire a valid Oregon or Washington state drivers license. TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to read full orchestra scores with comprehension. Acute aural skills including the ability to distinguish minute discrepancies between orchestral performance and the printed score. Comprehensive knowledge of musical scores to be conducted and or covered and demonstrated ability to lead the orchestra in preparation and performance of these scores. Extensive knowledge of standard repertory and arrangements of vernacular music. Familiarity with and feeling for vernacular musical styles of the 20th and 21st centuries. Readily understandable baton technique. Efficient and thoughtful rehearsal technique that manages rehearsal time effectively. Ability to analyze complex modern scores and to conduct mixed meters with accuracy. Ability to speak to an audience in a manner appropriate to its composition. OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: A deep appreciation for, understanding of and sensitivity to the needs of professional musicians. Interpersonal skills, diplomacy, pleasant manner, and objectivity essential. Inspires respect and trust through the highest personal standards of ethics and integrity. Demeanor of unflappability and professionalism in all job-related matters. Excellent communication skills. Sense of humor. Experience accompanying films is highly desirable.
